Photographer Ralph Morse and the Liberation of Paris’ 65th Anniversary

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

via: LIFE

“65 years ago today, the head of the German military garrison in Paris, General Dietrich von Choltitz, surrendered to Allied forces after a week of street battles, thus cementing what came to be known as the Liberation of Paris.

LIFE photographer Ralph Morse was on the scene to capture not only the tension between the German and Allied forces, but also the extraordinary events that followed when Paris was free once again.” - Huffington Post

New Radar Satellites Create 3D World

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

via: Discovery News

TanDEM-X is scheduled to meet up in orbit with its larger “twin” satellite TerraSAR-X and fly in a tight helix around it. As the two image the same section of Earth from slightly different angles, they will produce the first high-resolution 3-D pictures of the planet’s surface. The first such images are expected in January.

New maps generated this way will allow military jets to fly extremely low to the ground. Images will also be useful to disaster response, allowing workers to quickly determine which part of a region has been hit hardest by an earthquake or flood.

Of course this was developed first for military use. What happened to our investment in innovation that it only occurs for destruction?

Source: Bidoun

Just yesterday, Bidoun opened up a storefront location on Orchard Street in Chinatown.   The non-profit collective, mostly known for it’s publication on Middle Eastern art and Culture, now has a physical location.  I imagine they will be hosting a few lectures and exhibitions so keep it on your radar.

Detroit Video Compilation

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

I am in the midst of reading Richard Florida’s recently released Great Reset and images such as the ones captured in this video constantly come to mind. I imagine a day in the not too distant future when the suburbs of a city such as Phoenix begin to decompose to this state due to the rampant foreclosures and lack of sustaining infrastructure. Sadly those buildings will degrade at a remarkably faster rate due to their cheap construction methods.

Thanks for the tip Steve.

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

source: Hovied

Tropical storm, Agatha, swept across Guatemala last weekend leaving behind a sinkhole that spans an entire intersection.   Witnesses said they watched the massive hole engulf an entire 3-story building.  The images of the sinkhole reveal the importance of geographical studies on our urban infrastructure.

If you don’t have anything going on the evening of June 1st, you should stop by Anthology Film Archives to check out The Good the Bad and the Empty.  The film documents the various uses and activities that take place on empty lots in East Flatbush.  The cool part is, that the film was part of an afterschool program at Walt Whitman Elementary School.
