Help Build An App That Gives a Damn

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

We donated $250 to this brilliant cause… but it also guarantees we can grab Cameron Sinclair for a few minutes if funded. We’ve been trying to nail him down for an interview for months now but he may be even be harder to catch up with than Obama. Here’s hoping he will do an interview for Archiculture while he is in New York in a couple weeks.

Animated Versions of StoryCorps Stories

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

found via good.is

This is an amazingly touching story captured through the archival oral history project, StoryCorps. A couple of the stories have been animated such as the story of Danny & Annie above and more are planned. Be sure to check out the StoryCorps website to find out more about this amazing project and listen to more of the interviews.

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit whose mission is to provide Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives. Since 2003, StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 30,000 interviews from more than 60,000 participants. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to share, and is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, and millions listen to our weekly broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition and on our Listen pages.

Thanks for the tip Dylan.

Project H and the Design Revolution Roadshow

We covered this project a while back, before Emily Pilloton and Matt Miller set out on their 36-stop tour.  Their plan was to fill and airstream camper with various design inventions that exemplify the role that design can play in changing our communities.  The thought was that they could deliver their message directly to the doorsteps of average citizens.

They have since completed their tour and shared their experience with Core 77 which can be found here.

BAMcinemaFEST

source: BAM

I think this is the second year of cinemaFEST which is going on now through June 20 at BAM in Brooklyn.  I did not make it last year and just now caught wind of this years lineup.  Not sure if we will make it, but give us some feedback if you do attend.

Detroit Video Compilation

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

I am in the midst of reading Richard Florida’s recently released Great Reset and images such as the ones captured in this video constantly come to mind. I imagine a day in the not too distant future when the suburbs of a city such as Phoenix begin to decompose to this state due to the rampant foreclosures and lack of sustaining infrastructure. Sadly those buildings will degrade at a remarkably faster rate due to their cheap construction methods.

Thanks for the tip Steve.

Racing Dreams

Opens in New York on July 9th at the IFC. Get tickets now. Also, be sure to check the list of theaters that the film is currently being shown at around the country here.

Notice the music in the trailer?  It is one of my favorite bands from my hometown via Brooklyn, The National.

The Good The Bad and The Empty

Friday, May 28th, 2010

source: Core 77

If you don’t have anything going on the evening of June 1st, you should stop by Anthology Film Archives to check out The Good the Bad and the Empty.  The film documents the various uses and activities that take place on empty lots in East Flatbush.  The cool part is, that the film was part of an afterschool program at Walt Whitman Elementary School.
