Cup O’ Design with Mimi Zeiger

Mimi Zeiger with Cup O’ Design Series by archiculture

The third edition of the Cup O’ Design series catches Mimi Zeiger, author and editor of zine turned blog Loudpaper, and author of Tiny Houses, and New Museums: Contemporary Museum Architecture Around the World, at her apartment in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn.  Mimi started writing with the zine Loudpaper in the late 90s while attending SCI-Arc for her masters degree in architecture. She has since evolved and honed her writing skills while staying close to her passionate subject matter of architecture, art and design. She has published pieces in many of the leading architectural publications such as The New York Times, Metropolis, Dwell, Azure, and Architect, where she is a contributing editor. She has taught at Parsons, the California College of the Arts (CCA) and at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc.) Her cross-disciplinary seminars explore the relationships between architecture, art, urban space, and popular culture. She holds a Master of Architecture degree from SCI-Arc and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University. I sat down with her a few weeks ago to catch up on her world of writing, and design.

During the ensuing conversation we touched on the recent, wildly viral article she wrote on the, vertigo-inducing backyard installation by Thom Faulders [which] drew tons of viewer traffic, thanks in part to an irresistibly lowbrow quote from the client (a VP at Apple): “I wanted someone to barf when they look at it.” - ranked #1 in the Most Popular Stories of 2009 by Metropolis

Be on the lookout for new Cup O’ Design interviews coming in later February. The guests will include Geoff Manaugh of BLDGBLOG, Ben Hudson of Brooklyn Brewery, Jean Oei of Morphosis and Greg of East Village fame Mud Truck/Cafe.
